When I first read news reports that North Carolina legislators had introduced a bill making it illegal for renegade lunch ladies, overly-eager school officials, or wicked state lunch inspectors to snatch away a child’s home-packed lunch, I thought…hooray!  I’m glad North Carolina is fighting for food freedom (for a reminder of North Carolina's embarassing chicken nugget-gate episode, read my write-ups here and here).

Yes, at first I was happy…and then I got depressed.  Are we so far gone that we literally need legislation to protect common sense? Do we need state action to slap people’s hands away from kid’s brown bag?

Apparently so.

I’m going to need a cocktail.
