New York City Status Symbol: The Hillary Clinton Sighting
by Charlotte Allen
It's kind of like the Birkin bag: It's the Hillary Clinton sighting.
Just as former President Obama plans to hang around Washington, D.C., forever, Hillary keeps returning like a moth to a flame to New York City, the town that never sleeps and also gave her 79 percent of its votes in the 2016 election. Apparently it's kind of dull up there in super-suburban Chappaqua.
And so, bragging that you spotted Hillary somewhere on the isle of Manhattan (which gave her 86 percent of its votes) has become the new cronut.
The New York Times reports:
In the weeks since losing the election, Hillary Clinton has gone to four Broadway shows — often enough that industry wags joke about making her a Tony voter. And she’s even been spotted at theater district haunts — last week, just before seeing a revival of “Sunset Boulevard,” she had dinner at Orso with Kate McKinnon, the “Saturday Night Live” cast member who memorably portrayed her during the campaign.
At each theater appearance, Mrs. Clinton is greeted as a vanquished hero — standing ovations, selfies, shouted adulation.
And also tweets like these:
Hillary Clinton two rows behind me at Broadway's "Sunset Blvd" tonight. Got a standing ovation. She looked good, and happy.
But Broadway shows aren't the only Manhattan venues where onlookers can boost their social status by announcing they were in the same room as Hillary. Here, also reported by the New York Times, is Laura Brown, editor-in-chief of InStyle, bragging on Instagram:
Hillary Clinton was next to me at dinner tonight. She was eating burgers with Ralph Lauren at the Polo Bar. Big, juicy, fantastic burgers. And wine, and chocolate sundaes. I profiled her five years ago. When she was leaving, I jumped up and hugged her. "Beaches and speeches," I said, referring to a quote she gave me about what she'd be doing in 2016. "I saw you over there! I love that you came over!," she replied. "I love you, Hillary Clinton," I said. And I hugged her again.
That's the $300,000 Himalayan crocodile Birkin bag of Hillary sightings.
You can't say that New Yorkers aren't socially competitive.
