Tortured Spinning in Georgia

by Charlotte Allen

I'm loving the tortured spinning by the liberal press of Jon Ossoff's failure on Tuesday to get a majority of votes for that congressional seat in Georgia--despite the fact that his Big Dem Celebrity $8 million campaign war chest was twice the size of those of the 11 Republicans running against him in the race combined and eight times  the size of that of Karen Handel, the GOP candidate who got the second-highest number of votes and will be running off against Ossoff in June.

Let's check a few headlines:

The New York Times:

John Ossoff, a Democrat Narrowly Misses Outright Win in Georgia House Race

Mmm, 48 percent is "narrowly"?

The Washington Post:

Republicans Avoid Big Loss By Forcing Runoff in Ga. House Race

Yes, the fact that 11 of the 17 candidates in the Sixth District race were Republicans who wasted energy in-fighting while the Dems threw all their campaign eggs into the Ossoff basket did mean there would have been a "big loss" had Ossoff managed to inch over the 50 percent mark on Tuesday. He didn't--and the top four candidates, led by Handel with 20 percent, garnered, if you round off the pecentages, a fat 58 percent of the votes. So the election was actually a big win for the GOP, which will undoubtedly coalesce behind Handel, a well-liked super-competent former Georgia secretary of state.

From ABC News:

Democrat Ossoff Finishes First in Georgia Primary But Falls Short of Threshold to Avoid Runoff

Well, yes, because Ossoff, as I've pointed out, got every Democrat in the U.S. (most of them living in California, not Georgia) to back his candidacy--while the Republicans couldn't make up their minds whom to support. And as I also point out, the top four GOP candidates in the primary got 58 percent of the vote. Three of those top four vote-splinterers are now out of the race. Do you think their supporters are now going to vote for Ossoff? I've seen no signs of a #NeverHandel movement in the Georgia GOP.

Last week the Dems and their friends in the press tried to spin Kansas GOP Ron Estes's victory over his Democratic opponent in a special election for a Kansas House seat into "an embarrassing red-state scare."  And now it's Dem Wunderkind Ossoff's turn to be the secret winner in a race that for all intents and purposes he has already lost by a significant margin.

There are a few sane Democrats here and there who are actually worried about the situation, says Politico:

As it became clear late Tuesday evening that Jon Ossoff would fall just short of the 50-percent mark in the first round of voting in a suburban Atlanta special election, Democrats back in Washington started leafing through their calendars and asking: When does the winning start?

Maybe if the Democrats actually put together a platform instead of banking on anti-Trump "resistance" and Hollywood celebrity money...
