Cathy McMorris Rodgers Speaks . . . And You Should Listen

by Charlotte Hays

Don't miss House Republican Conference Chair Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers terrific interview with Ericka Andersen of NRO.

The congresswoman speaks movingly about her son Cole, who has Down Syndrome, and how her approach to health care policy has been affected by Cole. Cole is now in the fourth grade and doing well.

In the interview, McMorris Rodgers talks about the ABLE Act, which she authored and which had bipartisan support. It allows people with disabilities to accrue up to $100,000 in assets without losing benefits. Formerly, $2,000 in assets meant the end of benefits.

Now McMorris Rodgers is moving forward with the  ABLE Act 2.0, which aims at making it possible for more people with disabilities to be in the labor force. "A job is foundational in our lives," says McMorris Rodgers, adding that labor force participation for the disability community is under twenty percent, even though many with disabilities would welcome the opportunity to be more self-sufficient. Other topics: the importance of protecting those with pre-existing conditions, myths being spread about current health care legislation, and how to bring back civility in public life.
