Librarian Rejects Dr. Seuss Books Because Melania Trump Sent Them

by Patrice Lee Onwuka

First Lady Melania Trump gifted high-performing schools across the country with a bunch of Dr. Seuss books.

That was an unwelcome gift to a Massachusetts librarian, who is not really against Dr. Seuss as she claims, but just resisting anything related to President Trump.

Liz Phipps Soeiro’s school library was a recipient of a gift of 10 books from Melania Trump. Once school in each state received the books for educational excellence. That’s a tremendous honor.

Soeiro didn’t see it that way and penned a lengthy blog post on why she was rejecting the books and Trump.

First, she said “my school doesn’t have a NEED for these books.” For context, Cambridge, MA is home to Harvard University and MIT. They spend plenty of money on their students. Yet, even she acknowledges that they can’t close their achievement gaps.

Then, Soeiro rails against conservative education policy, one of the real issues setting her on fire:

Cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, and Detroit are suffering through expansion, privatization, and school “choice” with no interest in outcomes of children, their families, their teachers, and their schools… Why not go out of your way to gift books to underfunded and underprivileged communities that continue to be marginalized and maligned by policies put in place by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos?... ? Secretary DeVos would do well to scaffold and lift schools instead of punishing them with closures and slashed budgets.

Third, she takes FLOTUS to task for even selecting Dr. Seuss because he is “cliché, a tired and worn ambassador for children’s literature.”

Furthermore, Dr. Seuss is racist too according to her:

Another fact that many people are unaware of is that Dr. Seuss’s illustrations are steeped in racist propaganda, caricatures, and harmful stereotypes. Open one of his books (If I Ran a Zoo or And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street, for example), and you’ll see the racist mockery in his art.

She ended with the gall to provide FLOTUS a list of books that she and President Trump should read to better inform them when crafting the Administration’s policies. These included titles on immigration, segregation, and equality.

If only this smarter-than-thou librarian was wise enough to erase her past social media posts celebrating Dr. Seuss, then we might take her concerns with more than a grain of salt.

Twitter sleuths found pictures exposing Soeiro’s hypocrisy:

·         In one picture, she is posing in a “Cat-in-the-Hat” hat and stuffed animal beside a drawing of the iconic red-and-white hat and a big “Happy birthday Dr. Seuss” sign.

·         Another tweet shows her posing for a photo in her Cat-in-the-Hat gear and a side-by-side picture of bagels and party refreshments with the tweet “Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! K and 1 celebrated with a green egg breakfast.”

·         Another picture features a big Cat-in-the-Hat poster on the wall of the library.

The internet never forgets even when people conveniently evolve in the opinions. Whether she evolved to go from throwing Dr. Seuss parties to rejecting his books at racist propaganda, doesn’t matter though.

The problem is her progressive dogma. This librarian is willing to inject politics over the education of the children under her care.

If she didn’t “need” the books, why not regift them to another library in her area or allow students to take one home for free?

No, she would rather turn this into anti-Trump and anti-DeVos crusade. There’s nothing defensible about that.
