I disagree with her politics, but I like model Chrissy Teigen and her adorable kids and husband. I even have a little more respect for her after reading her comments about Kanye West and you may too.

Vogue just published an interview of the model that fawns over her cuddliness, her powerhouse social media presence, and her positioning as “next-gen Martha-Stewart.”

The essay is over the top in Chrissy worship, but there was one worthwhile section that brings a bit of common-sense to the hyper-politicized environment in Hollywood and the rest of America.

Teigen goes against the grain of Hollywood and explains why she and her husband can engage in civil and substantive disagreement with rapper Kanye West, but still maintain respect for his views:

“The thing with Kanye is that his opinions have always been super strong,” Teigen says, lifting Miles to her lap. “He’s never been the guy to push them on you, but he will say what he wants to say. Same with John. That’s why I loved that they were able to have this civil discourse. Kanye learned a lot in the months after that. John did, too.

“You can’t just believe you’re the right one all the time. That’s what makes us horrible,” she continues. “Trust me: My views are super liberal, and I’m like, How could anyone not think this way? But people are also entitled to their opinion.”

Let’s contrast this with the nasty political shot that rapper T.I. took at President Trump this week. He released a promotional video for his next album that depicted First Lady Melania Trump as a stripper performing for him in the White House.

T.I. posted the video to Twitter with the message “Dear 45, I ain’t Kanye,” that featured a Melania Trump look-alike dancing and stripping naked on the desk in a faux Oval Office.

This was payback for Kanye going to the White House last week to discuss policy solutions for the black community.

T.I. thinks he has the right to decide what Kanye thinks and does including working with the White House to amplify issues of unemployment, violence, and mass incarceration among blacks in areas like Chicago.

Degrading the First Lady was his vehicle to send a message to the President and Kanye West as well as to hype his next album.

Chrissy Teigen and T.I. provide a stark, but needed, contrast in how civil disagreement should or should not work.

Both are vocal opponents of the Trump Administration and probably can’t understand why their friend Kanye would leave the Hollywood/celebrity crowd to support the President. However, one wants to control Kanye while the other respects his right to think the way he does.

Sadly, too many on the left are behaving like T.I. rather than like Teigen. Hillary Clinton said Democrats can’t be civil until they win, Eric Holder says Democrats should “kick” Republicans, Senator Cory Booker told supporters to get in the faces of Republican members during the Kavanaugh hearings, and Rep. Maxine Waters has been inciting harassment of Trump Administration officials.

If all of us practiced agreeing to disagree while still treating each other with respect, we could turn down the dial on the ultra-divisive, toxic environment in society.
