Advertising and Marketing Mandates

One prong of the government’s attempts to encourage Americans to make healthy choices is through controlling food-related communication. Efforts include restricting how food is advertized on television, controlling businesses’ marketing practices (such as banning toys in Happy Meals) and dictating how calorie information is disclosed to consumers. Studies suggest that these regulations do little to influence Americans' food choices - but have the effect of raising food costs.
