Food Stamps and other Federal Food Programs

The federal government already spends $30,000 per low-income household on a variety of assistance programs. Food assistance is one of the primary ways in which the government helps poor families. Since 2007, he Food Stamp program (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP) has doubled in size, and now totals $70 billion per year. Fifteen percent of Americans - a full one in seven - now rely on food stamps for their food needs. These numbers reveal that this country is moving further and further away from self-reliance and toward greater dependence on government.
