Food nannies have for years warned consumers about the danger of eating various kinds of fish, because of high levels of mercury. These scare tactics have worked. Consumption of fish like tuna and swordfish has plummeted in recent years.
Yet normal consumption of many types of fish poses no risk. Worse, evidence increasingly suggests that the lack of seafood consumption is leaving Americans less healthy, because they are missing out on critical nutrients found in fish. This kind of alarmist misinformation is worse than unnecessary, as it actively discourages healthy eating.
