Statement: Kavanaugh Is A Champion Of Women & Limited Government

Washington, D.C. — Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) Legal Fellow Erin Hawley released the following statement today in response to attacks on U.S. Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s record on women:

“Judge Brett Kavanaugh does have a jaw-dropping record with women–but it is one that should lead to women's support, not opposition. His noteworthy record includes hiring more women for a prestigious D.C. Circuit clerkship than men. His staunch support for his female law clerks—regardless of their ideological persuasion—stands out. As those clerks wrote, he has worked tirelessly to make the judiciary ‘fairer and more equal.’

“In stark contrast to Judge Kavanaugh's real record on women, the attacks from left-leaning women's groups are self-defeating  These groups would rather trust the fate of the nation's most important decisions to unelected and unaccountable judges rather than trust the right which generations of women worked so hard to secure: the right to vote. When judges make policy choices, they take those decisions out of the hands of our elected representatives and thereby diminish the all important right and responsibility to participate in our government.

“Women should support Judge Kavanaugh not only because he has long been a champion of women but also because he believes in a limited constitutional role for the Supreme Court: a role that will allow women to continue to have a say in the laws by which they are governed.”

In addition to Hawley’s legal fellowship with IWF, she is an associate professor of law at the University of Missouri and a former clerk to Chief Justice John Roberts.
