ADVISORY

Independent Women’s Forum To Testify Before House Subcommittee on Environment

“Proposed revisions to the Mercury Air Toxics Standards rule are not about weakening existing protections, but rather fulfilling a legal obligation to properly respond to the Supreme Court through a process guided by science and the facts.”

Washington, D.C.—Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) Visiting Fellow Mandy Gunasekara will testify before the House Committee on Oversight and Reform on the effects of regulations proposed by the Trump administration relating to Mercury Air Toxics Standards (MATS) at 2:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, February 6, 2020.

Gunasekara’s testimony details why the proposed revisions to MATS are a positive change and how claims that the new standards would harm children are false and  feed into a culture of alarmism.

"The proposed MATS revision has nothing to do with changing mercury protections,” Gunasekara explains in her prepared testimony. “Those suggesting that it does either have not read the rule or are purposefully acting in a disingenuous manner. The proposed MATS revision aims to fix a dishonest accounting mechanism that the last administration used to justify any regulatory action regardless of costs."

Gunasekara will be joined on a panel by Dr. Laura Anderko, Director, Mid-Atlantic Center for Children’s Health and the Environment at Georgetown University; Reverend Mitchell C. Hescox, President and Chief Executive Officer at Evangelical Environmental Health Network; and Heather McTeer Toney, National Field Director for Moms Clean Air Force.

Gunasekara’s full testimony will be available at 2:00 p.m. ET here.

Date: Thursday, February 6, 2020 - 2:00 p.m. ET
Location: 2154 Rayburn House Office Building, Washington, DC
