Heartwarming: How Samaritan's Purse Answers the Call for Americans Hit by Disaster

by Ericka Andersen Sylvester

When tragedy hits in America, friends and neighbors show up. So do love-based organizations like Samaritan's Purse, which has been working hard in states around the country in 2018 to restore and rebuild homes destroyed by floods, fires and more. From Hawaii to Florida, Samaritan's Purse is on the front lines immediately -- and stays long after the TV cameras have move on to the next disaster.

Many people don't realize how long it takes for a person to reclaim the life her or she had before a horrific natural disaster.

“One thing that Samaritan’s Purse does is we try to salvage personal belongings for the homeowner...That’s where the difference comes. We’re making that personal connection with the homeowner. We’re also offering spiritual aid and just letting them know that they’re not by themselves, and God loves them. He hasn’t forgotten them," said staff member Lorenzo Torres.

It's important to note the organization also doesn't receive any government funding, meaning their team runs on charitable donations and volunteers. The work they do goes beyond simple clean-up. It's life-giving and heroic for the people who are able to retrieve beloved items that might have been lost forever -- or get back the homes they thought they might never see again.
