FCC RIGHT TO OVERTURN UNNECESSARY GOVERNMENT INTRUSION INTO THE INTERNET
Net Neutrality Stifled Innovation and Investment in Building and Expanding Broadband Networks
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Independent Women’s Forum Senior Policy Analyst Patrice Onwuka issued reaction below on the Federal Communication Commission overturning a two-year-old set of net neutrality rules:
"We applaud the Federal Communications Commission for voting to rollback unnecessary government intrusion into the internet and restore the light-touch regulatory environment that existed before the 2015 net neutrality policy was implemented.
"The internet has always been free and open – flourishing for almost two decades in a free-market environment. There was a robust, competitive market before the 2015 regulations were put in place. However, the FCC under the Obama administration unnecessarily assumed authority over internet providers leading to some unintended consequences: reduced innovation and less investment in building and expanding broadband networks.
"Repealing the 2015 rules and returning the policing of anticompetitive practices and consumer concerns to the Federal Trade Commission, the agency with the track record for enforcement and the power to provide consumer redress for violations of federal law, is the right course of action."
